Amazon Stranded Inventory: Why It Happens and How to Fix It Fast
Stranded inventory sits in Amazon fulfillment centers without an active listing, costing you storage fees. Here is why it happens and how to fix each cause in Seller Central.
Stranded inventory is FBA stock that is sitting in an Amazon fulfillment center but is not connected to an active listing. Amazon charges storage fees on stranded inventory. It generates zero sales. And if left unresolved for too long, Amazon will force removal or disposal at your expense.
How to find your stranded inventory
In Seller Central, go to Inventory, then Fix Stranded Inventory. This page shows every ASIN that has inventory in an Amazon warehouse with no active listing attached. Amazon also shows the "stranded reason" for each ASIN.
The most common stranded reasons
Listing closed by seller: you manually closed the listing while inventory was still at the fulfillment center. Fix: click Relist on the stranded inventory page.
Listing removed by Amazon: Amazon closed the listing due to a policy violation or suppression issue. Fix: resolve the underlying policy issue and then relist.
Pricing error: your listing was suppressed because the price violated Amazon's price validity policy. Fix: update the price and relist.
Missing required attribute: Amazon updated category requirements and your listing is now missing an attribute. Fix: update the listing with the required attribute and relist.
ASIN merged or split: Amazon merged or split your ASIN in a way that disconnected your inventory. Fix: contact Seller Support with your ASIN and inventory details.
The cost of ignoring stranded inventory
Amazon charges monthly storage fees on stranded inventory at the same rate as active inventory. Long-term storage fees apply regardless of whether the inventory is stranded or active. Beyond storage fees, stranded inventory ties up capital in product you cannot sell.
How to prevent stranded inventory
Before closing any listing, remove the FBA inventory first. When making changes to listing attributes, images, or pricing, make the changes in Manage Inventory rather than closing and relisting. Set up stranded inventory alerts in Seller Central notifications.
Using the Fix Stranded Inventory tool regularly
Check the Fix Stranded Inventory page once per week. It takes two minutes. Any ASIN you can relist, relist immediately. Any ASIN with a violation you cannot resolve quickly, place a removal order to stop storage fees accumulating.
