Amazon Product Photography Guide for Sellers: What Actually Converts
Your main image determines click-through rate from search results. Secondary images close the sale. Here is what works and what Amazon requires.
Why Product Photography Drives Conversions
On Amazon, shoppers see your main image before they see your title. In search results, the image is what gets the click. In the product page, the secondary image carousel handles most of the convincing. Bad photography does not just look unprofessional, it directly costs you sales at both the click and conversion stage.
Amazon Image Requirements
Main image: pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), product filling at least 85% of the frame, no props, no watermarks, no text overlays. This is strictly enforced. Secondary images (up to 9): much more flexible. You can include lifestyle shots, infographics, size comparisons, and text overlays here.
Main Image Best Practices
Fill the frame. If you have a small product, zoom in until it occupies most of the white space. Multiple unit showing, for products sold in packs, show all units in the main image. Angle matters: for most products, a 3/4 angle (not straight-on) shows more of the product and looks more dynamic. Clean shadows are acceptable and often look better than a completely flat light setup.
Secondary Image Strategy
Image 2 should be a lifestyle shot showing the product in use. Image 3 should address the most common question in your reviews (size chart, compatibility list, what is included in the box). Image 4 should be an infographic highlighting your 3 to 5 key features. Images 5 through 9 can cover additional use cases, certifications, comparison charts with competitors. The goal is to answer every purchase objection with a visual.
Video as a Secondary Media
Amazon allows one product video for brand-registered sellers. A 30 to 60 second video showing the product in use and highlighting key features consistently outperforms all other secondary media in conversion impact. Even a simple smartphone video is better than no video. The video slot appears in the secondary image carousel and is identified with a play button that catches attention.
