Amazon Listing Title Optimization: The Rules That Actually Affect Ranking
Your Amazon product title is the most important element in your listing. Here is how to write titles that rank well and convert.
Why Your Amazon Title Matters More Than Anything Else
Amazon's A9 algorithm weighs your product title more heavily than any other text field. Keywords in the title carry more ranking weight than keywords in bullet points or the product description. At the same time, a title crammed with keywords and no readable structure will hurt your click-through rate. The goal is a title that satisfies both the algorithm and the buyer who reads it.
Amazon's Title Character Limits
Most categories allow up to 200 characters including spaces. Some categories, particularly electronics and clothing, have stricter limits of 80 to 150 characters. Amazon will suppress listings whose titles exceed the limit. Check the style guide for your specific category in Seller Central before writing your title.
What to Include in the Title
The most effective Amazon titles follow this general structure: Brand + Product Name + Key Feature + Size/Quantity/Variant. For example: "AcmeBrand Stainless Steel Water Bottle, 32 oz, Leak-Proof, BPA-Free, Insulated for Cold and Hot Drinks." This structure puts the brand first (important for brand recognition), names the product clearly, and includes the most searched attributes.
Put your highest-priority keyword as close to the beginning of the title as possible. Shoppers scan titles from left to right, and truncation on mobile cuts off everything after about 80 characters. Your core keyword and product name must appear in the first 80 characters.
What to Avoid
Amazon prohibits promotional phrases ("Best Seller", "Free Shipping", "Sale"), subjective claims ("Amazing Quality"), and symbols or special characters. Titles with these elements risk suppression or removal of the buy box. Do not use all-caps except for acronyms. Avoid keyword stuffing in ways that make the title unreadable: "Water Bottle Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles for Kids Adults Men Women Water Bottle 32oz" is a suppression risk and converts poorly.
How to Research Which Keywords to Include
Use Amazon's autocomplete to find phrases buyers actually type. Start typing your main product keyword and note every autocomplete suggestion. Run your top competitor's ASIN through a keyword tool to see what phrases they rank for. Prioritize exact-match phrases over partial matches. Your title can realistically hold 3 to 5 meaningful keyword phrases when written naturally.
Testing and Iterating
Amazon's Manage Your Experiments tool (A/B testing) lets brand-registered sellers test two titles simultaneously. Run tests for at least two weeks to get statistically meaningful data. Track conversion rate and unit session percentage, not just sessions. A title that drives more sessions but converts at a lower rate may be performing worse overall.
