Amazon FBA vs FBM: Which Fulfillment Model Is Right for You in 2026
FBA handles fulfillment but costs more. FBM gives you control but requires infrastructure. Learn how to decide which model fits your products and margins.
FBA and FBM: The Core Difference
With Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), you ship your inventory to Amazon's warehouses and Amazon handles storage, picking, packing, and shipping to customers. With Fulfillment by Merchant (FBM), you store inventory yourself and ship orders directly to customers. Both models work, and many successful sellers use both strategically depending on the product.
When FBA Makes Sense
FBA is usually the better choice for products with consistent demand, high volume, and good margins after fees. FBA products are Prime-eligible by default, which significantly increases conversion rates. Amazon handles all customer service and returns for FBA orders. If you sell standardized, non-perishable products with predictable sales velocity, FBA's operational simplicity often outweighs its costs.
When FBM Makes Sense
FBM is better for oversized or heavy items where FBA storage and fulfillment fees become prohibitive. It also works well for slow-moving inventory, where long-term FBA storage fees would accumulate significantly. Sellers who have fast, reliable in-house fulfillment operations and want more control over the customer experience often prefer FBM for certain SKUs. During Amazon's peak periods when FBA capacity is restricted, FBM provides a reliable backup.
The Fee Calculation
FBA fees include fulfillment fees per unit (based on size and weight), monthly storage fees, and long-term storage fees for inventory over 365 days. FBM fees include only the referral fee per sale, but you absorb shipping, packaging, and storage costs yourself. Use Amazon's FBA Revenue Calculator to compare net profit for your specific products before deciding.
Hybrid Strategy
Many experienced sellers run FBA for their bestsellers and FBM as a backup. When an FBA product goes out of stock at Amazon's warehouse, having an active FBM offer prevents losing the Buy Box entirely. This hybrid approach keeps your listing active through inventory transitions and protects your ranking.
