Amazon Japan

Listing language: Japanese

Referral Fees & Costs

Japanese referral fees are among the lowest globally for some categories, often 8–10%. Japan requires Consumption Tax (JCT) registration for foreign sellers making over 10 million JPY in taxable transactions in Japan. The Japan marketplace requires significantly more preparation than Western markets due to language and cultural requirements.

Listing Requirements

  • Product titles must be in Japanese — English-only titles dramatically underperform and may violate Amazon Japan listing guidelines
  • Bullet points and descriptions should be in Japanese; using machine translation alone often produces unacceptable quality
  • Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) certification may be required for electrical, toy, and food-contact products
  • PSE mark (Product Safety Electrical Appliance & Material Law) is mandatory for all electrical products before listing on Amazon Japan
  • Food and cosmetic products require pre-approval from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW)
  • Consumption Tax (JCT) registration required once revenue threshold is met; Amazon collects and remits on behalf of eligible sellers

Common Errors on This Marketplace

  • English-only listing content — Japanese buyers strongly prefer native-language listings
  • PSE mark not obtained for electrical products, causing immediate listing removal
  • Product dimensions listed in non-metric units — Japan uses metric exclusively
  • Images showing products with non-Japanese language text on packaging (confusing to buyers)
  • Return policy not meeting Japan's high customer service expectations, leading to A-to-Z claims

Shipping & FBA Notes

Amazon Japan FBA operates from fulfillment centers in Chiba, Kanagawa, Osaka, and other regions. Import duties and customs clearance into Japan must be managed before sending to FBA.
