Amazon Listing Image Requirements 2026: Main Image Rules and Best Practices
Amazon listing image requirements in 2026: main image rules, allowed secondary image types, minimum resolution, common rejection reasons, and how to optimize images for conversion.
Main Image Requirements
The main product image (the first image shown in search results and at the top of the product page) has strict requirements: pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), product must fill 85%+ of the frame, no text, logos, watermarks, borders, or additional objects, no mannequins for most apparel (flat lay or on model is preferred), and the product must be the only item shown (no accessories, props, or lifestyle context). Violation of main image rules results in suppressed listings -- the product is removed from search results until fixed.
Resolution and File Requirements
Minimum: 500 pixels on the longest side (very low -- the practical minimum for acceptable zoom quality is much higher). Recommended: 2,000 pixels on the longest side minimum, 3,000+ preferred. Amazon's zoom feature activates at 1,001 pixels on the longest side -- below that, customers cannot zoom in. Accepted formats: JPEG (.jpg), TIFF (.tif), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif). JPEG is the most common and smallest file size. Maximum file size: 10MB per image.
Secondary Image Best Practices
Secondary images (positions 2-9) have fewer restrictions and are your opportunity to convert browsers into buyers. Effective secondary images: lifestyle shots showing the product in use (contextual, aspirational), infographics showing dimensions, materials, or key features, comparison images (before/after, with/without), close-up detail shots of texture, stitching, or quality indicators, and packaging shots for products where packaging matters. Research competitor listings in your category -- what secondary images do the best sellers use? Those formats work for your audience.
Common Rejection Reasons
Off-white or gray background (the white must be pure: RGB 255,255,255 -- product photography studios use seamless white paper under controlled lighting to achieve this). Product too small in frame (product must fill at least 85% -- common with small products photographed with too much negative space). Text or logos on main image (even 'new' badges, 'best seller' overlays, or brand logos are not allowed on main images). Multiple products shown in main image when only one is being sold. Watermarks or copyright marks on any image.
Video
Brand-registered sellers can add product videos to their listings. Videos appear in the image gallery and in a separate 'Related videos' section. Videos that perform well: under 60 seconds, show the product in use within the first 3 seconds, demonstrate a problem being solved, and have subtitles (most views are without sound). Amazon processes video uploads within 1-2 business days for review.
