Amazon GTIN Exemption 2026: When You Need One and How to Apply
Amazon requires a GTIN (barcode) for most products, but you can apply for an exemption for handmade, private label, or certain bundled products. Here is how.
A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number -- which includes UPC, EAN, and ISBN barcodes) is required by Amazon for most product listings. If your product does not have a barcode -- because it is handmade, private label without a GS1 barcode, a custom bundle, or a parts/accessories product -- you can apply for a GTIN exemption. Without the exemption, Amazon will reject your listing during creation.
## When You Qualify for a GTIN Exemption
Amazon grants exemptions for: products that are handmade by you and do not have a manufacturer barcode, private label products where you are the manufacturer and have not yet obtained a GS1 barcode, bundled products that you created (two or more items sold together that do not have a combined barcode), and certain categories where GTINs are not standard (some parts and accessories categories).
You do NOT qualify if: your product is a branded product that has a barcode but you simply do not have it, or if you are reselling a product where the barcode exists on the original packaging.
## How to Apply
In Seller Central, go to Catalog > Add Products. Start a new listing. When you reach the product ID field, you will see an option to "Apply for GTIN exemption" or similar wording (the interface changes periodically). Click it and select your brand and product category. Amazon reviews the request -- approval usually comes within 24-48 hours. If you already have a brand registered under Brand Registry, the process is faster and approval rates are higher.
## The GS1 Alternative
If you plan to scale your private label brand, apply for a GS1 barcode rather than an exemption. A GS1 barcode ($30 for a single barcode, $250 for 10) gives you a globally recognized product identifier, improves your Amazon listing quality score, and makes it easier to sell across other channels (retail, Walmart, other marketplaces). GTIN exemptions work for Amazon specifically, but they do not transfer to other platforms.
