How to Get Ungated for Restricted Amazon Categories
Which Amazon categories and products require approval, what documents you need, and how to submit a successful ungating application.
Many profitable Amazon categories are restricted — Amazon requires sellers to apply for approval before listing products in them. Getting approved ("ungated") opens access to less-competitive markets with serious buyers.
Categories that require approval
Major restricted categories include: Grocery and Gourmet Food, Health and Personal Care, Beauty and Personal Care (for certain brands), Jewelry, Watches, Fine Art, Collectible Coins, Sports Collectibles, Entertainment Collectibles, Automotive and Powersports (for certain parts), Streaming Media Players, and Clothing, Shoes, and Accessories (for major brands like Nike, Adidas, and Levi's).
Within unrestricted categories, specific brands are still gated. Amazon, Nike, Apple, and hundreds of other brands require per-brand approval even if the category is open.
What ungating requires
Most category ungating requires: an invoice from a manufacturer or authorized distributor showing you purchased the relevant products within the past 90 days; the invoice must show your business name and address; it must show at least 10 units purchased; it must clearly show the product name, the seller's name, and the seller's contact information.
Some categories additionally require: a business license, a website for your brand, product safety documentation (for certain health or children's products), or FDA registration (for food and supplement sellers).
Submitting the application
Go to Seller Central > Catalog > Add Products. Search for a product in the restricted category. You will see a button saying "Apply to sell" next to the product. Click it and follow the prompts to upload your documentation.
Make sure your invoice shows your full business name (matching your Seller Central account), your address, and the supplier's contact details. Blur any pricing information if you prefer — Amazon does not require pricing on invoices.
After submitting
Amazon reviews applications within 3-5 business days. If rejected, you will receive a rejection notice with the reason. The most common rejection reasons: invoice is more than 90 days old, invoice does not show a minimum of 10 units, invoice is from a retailer rather than a distributor (Walmart receipts are not accepted), or the product on the invoice does not clearly match the restricted category.
If rejected, do not reapply with the same documents. Fix the issue first — get a new invoice from a distributor if yours was from a retailer — then reapply.
Professional ungating services
Some third-party services offer to get you ungated. Be cautious: some use fraudulent invoices, which violates Amazon's terms and can lead to account suspension. Only use legitimate distributors to obtain real invoices for real product purchases.
