Amazon Policy: Listing Content

Amazon Product Title Requirements

Amazon's official requirements for product titles: character limits, prohibited content, and formatting rules by category.

Key Points

  • Maximum 200 characters (many categories enforce 80 characters for mobile display)
  • Must include brand name, product type, and key attributes
  • No promotional language (sale, free shipping, buy now)
  • No special characters except hyphens, commas, and periods
  • Capitalize the first letter of each word (Title Case)

Policy Details

Amazon's product title policy requires titles to be informative, accurate, and readable. Titles must not exceed 200 characters in total, and many categories enforce stricter limits — apparel titles should be under 80 characters for optimal mobile display. Titles must include the brand name, primary product type, and at least one key attribute (size, color, material, or count). Prohibited title content includes: promotional language such as "sale," "deal," "free shipping," "buy now," or "limited offer"; special characters including pipes (|), exclamation points (!), quotation marks, or trademark/copyright symbols; HTML tags or formatting codes; competitor brand names; and irrelevant keywords that do not describe the product. Amazon recommends Title Case formatting (capitalize each word) and using numbers where appropriate ("Pack of 12" rather than "Pack of twelve"). Amazon's systems can automatically edit titles that violate these policies without seller notification — this is one reason listing monitoring is important. If your title has been edited by Amazon, check the current live title against your Seller Central version and investigate whether a policy trigger caused the change.

Common Violations

  • Keyword stuffing beyond readable title
  • Special characters from supplier data
  • Exceeding 200 character limit
  • Omitting brand name
