Amazon Policy: Listing Content

Amazon Product Description Policy

Requirements and prohibited content for Amazon product descriptions, including A+ Content rules for brand-registered sellers.

Key Points

  • Plain text descriptions allow basic HTML tags (paragraphs, line breaks) in the description field
  • Maximum 2000 characters for standard description
  • A+ Content replaces standard description for brand-registered sellers
  • No false or misleading claims
  • No references to competitors

Policy Details

Amazon product descriptions must accurately describe the product and not contain false, misleading, or exaggerated claims. Standard product descriptions (for non-brand-registered sellers) support basic HTML tags including paragraph breaks and line breaks. Maximum length is approximately 2000 characters. Brand-registered sellers can replace the standard description with A+ Content (Enhanced Brand Content), which allows images, comparison charts, and richer formatting. A+ Content is subject to its own policy — it cannot include pricing information, availability, competitor brand names, or contact information. All product descriptions (standard and A+) must not contain: claims that a product is FDA-approved unless it genuinely is, medical treatment claims, testimonials, star ratings or review references, seller-specific offers (free gifts, warranties beyond what's in the product), or time-sensitive content. Descriptions are indexed by Amazon for search but carry less keyword weight than title, bullets, and backend keywords — focus on converting buyers rather than keyword density.

Common Violations

  • Drug or health claims in health product descriptions
  • References to competitor products
  • Shipping or seller-specific information
  • Unverifiable superlative claims
