Policy Details
Setting up parent-child relationships on Amazon requires both the structure and content to be consistent. The parent ASIN is a non-purchasable shell that organizes all variations — customers cannot buy the parent directly. The parent's content (title, bullets, description) should describe the product family broadly, applicable to all variants. Each child ASIN represents one specific variation and is what customers actually purchase. Technical requirements: all children must be in the same category and use the same product type identifier; the variation theme (which attributes differ between children) must be declared on the parent ASIN and every child must have a value for that attribute; variation attribute values must be consistent — you cannot have "Red" on one child and "RED" on another or "Bright Red" on a third for the same color; each child needs a unique SKU and its own main image showing that specific variant. For flat file uploads: the parent row has a value in the "parent_child" column of "parent" and children have "child" plus the parent's SKU in the "parent_sku" column. The variation theme is declared on the parent row. Children inherit the parent's reviews and sales rank data — this is both the major benefit of variation families and the reason Amazon monitors for variation abuse.
Common Violations
- ⚠Children with mismatched product types
- ⚠Inconsistent color naming across children (Red, Bright Red, Apple Red)
- ⚠Parent ASIN with buyable offer attached
- ⚠Children missing required variation attributes
