Policy Details
Amazon's dangerous goods (hazmat) policy exists because some products require special handling and storage to comply with transportation regulations (DOT, IATA) and warehouse safety requirements. Products that commonly trigger hazmat review: all products containing lithium batteries (smartphones, tablets, power banks, toys with rechargeable batteries), aerosol products (sprays, inhalers, compressed gas cans), flammable liquids (certain cleaning products, paint, nail polish remover), products containing certain chemicals (pool chemicals, certain fertilizers), and medical devices with specific classifications. The hazmat review process: Amazon uses automated systems to flag potential hazmat products. When flagged, the product enters "Dangerous Goods Review" status. Sellers must submit a Safety Data Sheet (SDS/MSDS) from the manufacturer within a specified timeframe. For lithium batteries, a UN38.3 test summary and battery exemption form may also be required. Based on submitted documentation, Amazon classifies the product as: not hazmat (approved for standard FBA), hazmat approved (can ship to FBA but with restrictions on quantities per shipment and warehouse storage limits), or restricted (cannot be stored or shipped through FBA and must use FBM). Products shipped to FBA that contain undisclosed hazmat materials can result in shipment rejection, disposal fees, and account violations.
Common Violations
- ⚠Shipping lithium batteries to FBA without completing hazmat review
- ⚠No SDS provided when requested
- ⚠Underdeclaring battery capacity to avoid hazmat classification
- ⚠Sending aerosols to standard FBA without hazmat approval
