Amazon Policy: Compliance

Amazon Gated Category Policy: How to Get Ungated

Which Amazon categories require approval to sell in, what documentation is needed, and how the ungating process works.

Key Points

  • Gated categories require Amazon approval before you can list products
  • Approval typically requires invoices from authorized distributors or manufacturers
  • Some categories are auto-approved; others require manual review
  • Getting gated can happen if your account has policy violations
  • Each marketplace has its own gating requirements

Policy Details

Amazon gates certain categories to protect buyers from counterfeit goods, ensure product quality standards, and comply with brand requirements. Current gated categories include: Grocery & Gourmet Food, Health & Beauty (brand-specific gating), Jewelry, Watches, Toys & Games (seasonal gating in Q4), Collectibles, Streaming Media Players, Automotive (some sub-categories), and specific brands across all categories. The ungating process: go to Inventory > Add Products > search for a product in the gated category > click "Apply to Sell" if it appears. The application asks for documentation proving you are an authorized seller. Documentation requirements vary by category but typically include: invoices from a legitimate, brand-authorized distributor or the brand manufacturer directly (not retail stores, not Alibaba, not clearance warehouses); invoices dated within the last 90 days; invoices showing at least 10 units purchased; and sometimes product images showing the items match what is being sold. Amazon reviews applications manually and typically responds within 2-5 business days. Common rejection reasons: invoices from unauthorized sources (Amazon recognizes distributor names), invoices with suspicious formatting, invoices for quantities below the threshold, or account health issues that make Amazon unwilling to approve. If rejected, the rejection email specifies the reason — address it specifically before reapplying.

Common Violations

  • Submitting invoices from unauthorized distributors or retail stores
  • Invoices older than 90 days
  • Invoice quantities too low (some categories require 10+ units)
  • Invoices that appear modified
