Amazon Policy: FBA

Amazon FBA Labeling Requirements

Requirements for FNSKU labels, ASIN barcodes, shipping labels, and other labeling needed for FBA inventory.

Key Points

  • Every FBA unit must have a scannable barcode — either manufacturer barcode or FNSKU label
  • FNSKU labels must cover any existing manufacturer barcodes when using FNSKU labeling
  • Shipping cartons must have a specific Amazon shipment label from Seller Central
  • Expiration dates must be visible on all perishable items
  • Label placement requirements vary by product type

Policy Details

Amazon FBA requires every unit to have a scannable identifier that Amazon can use to receive, locate, and ship inventory. Barcode options: manufacturer barcode (UPC, EAN, ISBN) — Amazon can use the manufacturer barcode if you are enrolled in the stickerless commingled inventory option for the ASIN. This means your units are stored with identical products from other sellers; FNSKU label — this is an Amazon-specific label that ties inventory specifically to your seller account. Required when: the product does not have a manufacturer barcode, you opt out of commingled inventory, or the ASIN requires FNSKU labeling due to compliance reasons. When using FNSKU labels, the label must fully cover any other barcodes so Amazon's scanners only pick up the FNSKU. Label requirements: the barcode must be scannable (not printed on reflective material, not partially hidden, not located in a position where scanning equipment cannot reach it); label size must allow scanning without removing the label; black text on white background is standard. Expiration date labeling: all products with a shelf life (food, health supplements, cosmetics, medications, baby items) must have the expiration date visible on the unit before sending to FBA. Format must be MM/DD/YYYY or MM/YYYY. Amazon rejects shipments with expired inventory and may charge disposal fees. Shipping box labels: every shipment to FBA requires a shipment label generated in Seller Central during the shipping plan creation. This label must be on the outside of each carton in the shipment.

Common Violations

  • Manufacturer barcode visible through FNSKU label (insufficient coverage)
  • Expired or damaged labels that cannot be scanned
  • Missing expiration date labels on food or health items
  • Incorrect FBA box labels
