Key Points

  • New: factory-sealed, never used, in original packaging
  • Used: has been opened or used, ranging from Like New to Acceptable
  • Renewed (Refurbished): professionally restored to working order
  • Condition descriptions must accurately match the product condition
  • Selling used products as new is a serious policy violation

Policy Details

Amazon's condition guidelines define exactly what each condition label means and what sellers must do to list under each condition. New condition: the item is in original, factory-sealed packaging and has never been used or opened. Even a box that has been opened and resealed does not qualify as New — it must be genuinely factory-sealed. Products must be in flawless condition with all original accessories and documentation included. Used conditions (graded by Amazon): Like New — appears unopened, all accessories and documentation included, no signs of use; Very Good — minor signs of use, all accessories included, may have small cosmetic blemishes; Good — moderate signs of use, some accessories may be missing, fully functional; Acceptable — significant signs of use, major accessories may be missing, but the item is functional. Renewed/Refurbished condition: applies to electronics and other products that have been professionally restored to working condition. Amazon has specific standards for Renewed products including testing requirements, warranty requirements, and packaging standards. Selling a used or returned product as New is one of Amazon's most serious condition violations — it results in listing suppression, Account Health violations, and can lead to suspension. Amazon's customer-reported "Item not as described" data is analyzed to detect systematic condition misrepresentation.

Common Violations

  • Returned or opened products sold as New
  • Inaccurate condition descriptions (rating Acceptable items as Like New)
  • Renewed products not meeting Amazon's refurbishment standards
