Amazon Product Photography DIY: How to Shoot Compliant Images on a Budget
How to take your own Amazon-compliant product photos at home with a simple setup that costs under $100.
Professional product photography costs $200-$800 per product, which is out of reach for many new sellers. DIY photography is viable for most product categories if you follow Amazon requirements carefully. Equipment: a camera (modern smartphone cameras are sufficient for most products); a white backdrop (a $15 poster board from a craft store or a dedicated photography backdrop); a light tent or softbox lighting ($20-$60 on Amazon) to create even, shadow-free light; and a tripod ($20-$30) to keep the camera steady. White background setup: place white poster board curved so it transitions seamlessly from vertical to horizontal (no visible corner edge). Light the setup with two lights at 45-degree angles to eliminate shadows. If using natural light, position the setup near a large window on an overcast day for diffused, even light. Shooting: fill the frame with the product -- it should occupy 85%+ of the image. Shoot at the highest resolution your camera allows. Take 10+ shots at slightly different angles and select the best. Post-processing: use a free tool (GIMP, Canva, or even the Windows Photos app) to ensure the background is pure white (RGB 255,255,255). Amazon's image checker sometimes rejects off-white or grey backgrounds even if they look white to the eye. Common DIY mistakes: shooting on a colored surface that reflects color onto the product; having visible shadows; shooting at an angle where the product edge blurs; and not filling enough of the frame with the product.
