Amazon GTIN Exemption: How to List Products Without a Barcode
How to apply for a GTIN exemption on Amazon to list products that do not have a manufacturer barcode.
A GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) exemption allows sellers to list products on Amazon without a standard barcode such as a UPC or EAN. This is relevant for handmade products, private label products without manufacturer codes, bundled products, and certain custom items. How to apply: go to Seller Central > Add Products and start creating a listing. When you reach the barcode section, click "Apply for GTIN Exemption." Select your brand and product category. Amazon reviews the application and typically approves or denies it within 24 hours. Requirements for approval: the product must be genuinely exemptible (not a product with a known barcode); the brand name must match a brand you are enrolled in (for brand-registered sellers); and the category must support GTIN exemptions. Once approved, Amazon assigns an internal identifier. Important: GTIN exemptions apply per brand and category combination. If you sell private label products across multiple categories, you may need separate exemptions per category.
