Amazon Flat File Upload: How to Bulk List and Edit Products

How to use Amazon's flat file (inventory template) upload system for bulk listing creation and mass attribute updates.

Amazon's flat file system (also called inventory file or inventory template) allows sellers to create or edit multiple listings at once using a spreadsheet that follows a specific format. This is the most efficient method for managing large catalogs. Getting started: go to Seller Central > Catalog > Add Products via Upload. Download the inventory file template for your product category. Each category has its own template with specific required columns. Template structure: the template has multiple tabs — Instructions, Data, Images, and sometimes category-specific tabs. The Data tab is where you fill in your product information. Required fields are marked in one color, recommended in another. Column types include basic attributes (title, description, bullets, brand, ASIN), listing attributes (condition, price, quantity, fulfillment method), variation attributes (parent/child relationships, variation theme, size, color), and compliance attributes (battery type, hazmat info, target audience). Common flat file uses: creating many new listings at once; updating prices or inventory quantities in bulk; adding or changing variation relationships; updating attributes across many ASINs simultaneously; and exporting your catalog to a spreadsheet for audit. Processing: after uploading, go to Manage Inventory > Monitor Upload Status to see the processing result. Download the processing report to see which rows succeeded and which failed, with error codes explaining each failure. Common errors include missing required attributes, invalid attribute values, and category mismatches. Fix errors in the file and reupload.
