Amazon FBA vs FBM: Which Fulfillment Method Is Right for You?

A complete comparison of Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) and Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) — costs, pros, cons, and when to use each.

Choosing between FBA and FBM is one of the most impactful decisions an Amazon seller makes. Both methods have distinct cost structures, operational requirements, and strategic implications.

FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) means you send your inventory to Amazon's fulfillment centers, and Amazon handles picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns. Your listings get the Prime badge, which significantly improves conversion rate — Prime-eligible listings typically convert 3-5x better than non-Prime listings.

FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) means you store inventory yourself and ship each order directly to buyers. You pay no FBA fees but handle all logistics yourself. Seller-Fulfilled Prime (SFP) is a hybrid — you ship from your own warehouse but meet Prime speed and quality standards, earning the Prime badge without FBA fees.

Cost comparison: FBA fees include a fulfillment fee per unit (based on size and weight, typically $3-$7 for standard-size products) plus monthly storage fees ($0.75/cubic foot in off-peak months, $2.40/cubic foot in October-December). For a standard-size product priced at $30, FBA fees plus referral fee might total $7-10, meaning 23-33% of revenue in fees.

FBM costs depend entirely on your shipping carrier, packaging, and labor costs. Sellers with efficient warehouse operations can sometimes undercut FBA fees for heavy or oversized products.

When FBA wins: products that are small, light, and high-value; products with strong seasonal demand where storage cost is manageable; sellers without warehouse infrastructure; and any situation where Prime badge drives conversion significantly.

When FBM wins: heavy or oversized products where FBA fee tiers make costs prohibitive; products with very slow turn rates where long-term storage fees would accumulate; sellers with existing warehouse operations; and during periods where FBA capacity is restricted.
