How to Fix: Wrong Item Type (Browse Node Mismatch)

Why this happens

The item_type attribute or browse node for your listing does not accurately reflect what the product is. This causes the listing to appear in incorrect category paths and miss buyers who filter by the correct subcategory.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1Search for your product on Amazon and note the category path shown under the title on competitor listings (e.g., "Home & Kitchen > Kitchen & Dining > Cutting Boards")
  2. 2In Edit Listing > Product Info, check the Item Type and verify it matches the correct subcategory
  3. 3If you can edit it directly, update to the correct item type and save
  4. 4If the field is locked or keeps reverting, open a Seller Support case requesting a browse node change with the correct node ID (look up the node ID in the Amazon category tree or ask Seller Support)
  5. 5For flat file corrections: download your category's inventory template and find the correct item_type value from the valid values tab

Prevention tips

  • Research the correct item type and browse node before creating any new listing
  • Compare your listing's category path to your top 3 competitors before publishing
  • Audit your category assignments annually — Amazon occasionally restructures category trees which can move listings
Typical fix time: 24-72 hours
