How to Fix: Wrong Category

Why this happens

The listing is classified under the incorrect Amazon category. This happens when a product is broadly similar to another category, when a supplier provides incorrect category information, or when Amazon auto-assigns a category during the upload process.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1Identify the correct Amazon category by searching for your product and noting where top competitors are listed
  2. 2In Seller Central, go to Edit Listing > Product Info and find the Item Type field
  3. 3Enter the correct item type — this may change the browse node (category path) automatically
  4. 4If the category cannot be changed via the standard edit form, open a Seller Support case requesting a category change with the correct browse node ID
  5. 5After the change, verify the listing appears in the correct category by searching your main keyword

Prevention tips

  • Research the correct category and browse node before creating a new listing
  • Use Amazon's category tree to confirm the exact path: General Category > Sub-category > Item Type
  • When using flat files, verify the item_type value maps to the correct browse node
Typical fix time: 24-72 hours
