How to Fix: Missing Keywords

Why this happens

The backend search terms field is either empty or significantly under-utilized. This is one of the most common missed optimization opportunities — many sellers never fill backend keywords after the initial listing creation.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1Go to Edit Listing > Keywords tab
  2. 2In the Search Terms field (250 characters maximum), add keywords not already in your title, bullets, or description
  3. 3Include: synonyms, alternate spellings, related terms, common misspellings, complementary products, and use-case phrases
  4. 4Do not repeat keywords already in your title — Amazon indexes them regardless of backend duplication but wastes your character budget
  5. 5Do not include competitor brand names — this violates Amazon policy
  6. 6Save and allow 24-72 hours for new keywords to index

Prevention tips

  • Treat backend keywords as a living document — review and update quarterly
  • Use Amazon's Search Term Report in Business Reports to discover new terms buyers actually use
  • Run a keyword indexing check every 90 days to confirm all backend terms are being indexed
Typical fix time: 30 minutes
