How to Fix: Missing Keywords
Why this happens
The backend search terms field is either empty or significantly under-utilized. This is one of the most common missed optimization opportunities — many sellers never fill backend keywords after the initial listing creation.
Step-by-step fix
- 1Go to Edit Listing > Keywords tab
- 2In the Search Terms field (250 characters maximum), add keywords not already in your title, bullets, or description
- 3Include: synonyms, alternate spellings, related terms, common misspellings, complementary products, and use-case phrases
- 4Do not repeat keywords already in your title — Amazon indexes them regardless of backend duplication but wastes your character budget
- 5Do not include competitor brand names — this violates Amazon policy
- 6Save and allow 24-72 hours for new keywords to index
Prevention tips
- ✓Treat backend keywords as a living document — review and update quarterly
- ✓Use Amazon's Search Term Report in Business Reports to discover new terms buyers actually use
- ✓Run a keyword indexing check every 90 days to confirm all backend terms are being indexed
Typical fix time: 30 minutes
