How to Fix: Incorrect Barcode (UPC/EAN/GTIN)

Why this happens

The barcode submitted with the listing does not match the product's actual barcode, or a barcode was submitted that belongs to a different product. Amazon uses barcodes to match listings to its catalog and to verify FBA inventory.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1Verify the barcode on your actual product packaging
  2. 2Check the ASIN detail page to see what barcode Amazon has on file — this is visible in Product Information section
  3. 3If the barcode on the listing is wrong, go to Edit Listing > Product Info and correct the External Product ID and External Product ID Type fields
  4. 4If the barcode matches a different ASIN in Amazon's catalog, you will need to contact Seller Support for a catalog correction
  5. 5For FBA, ensure the physical barcode on your units matches what Amazon has on file before shipping to fulfillment centers

Prevention tips

  • Source barcodes from GS1 to ensure unique ownership and no catalog conflicts
  • Verify barcode matching at the time of listing creation, not after shipping to FBA
  • Audit barcode data annually, especially if products have been updated or repackaged
Typical fix time: 24-72 hours
