How to Fix: Hidden Keyword Abuse

Why this happens

Backend search terms contain prohibited content: competitor brand names, irrelevant keywords, repeated keywords, or terms that Amazon has restricted. Amazon actively checks backend keywords and can suppress listings or close accounts for violations.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1Go to Edit Listing > Keywords > Search Terms
  2. 2Review every keyword for: competitor brand names (remove all), irrelevant terms (remove any unrelated to your product), repeated keywords (keep only one instance of each root word)
  3. 3Ensure total character count is under 250 bytes
  4. 4Do not use keywords that appear in your title — those are already indexed
  5. 5Do not use restricted terms like drug names, weapons components, or category-specific prohibited terms
  6. 6Save and allow 24-72 hours for the index to update

Prevention tips

  • Build a backend keyword review step into your listing QA process
  • Keep a document of your current backend keywords and update it whenever you change them
  • Do not purchase keyword lists from vendors that claim to include competitor terms — this is against policy
Typical fix time: 30 minutes
