How to Fix: Duplicate Keywords in Backend

Why this happens

Backend search terms contain the same keyword multiple times, or contain keywords that are already in the title or bullets. Amazon only indexes each keyword once, so duplicates waste the 250-character backend keyword budget.

Step-by-step fix

  1. 1Export or copy your current backend keywords into a text editor
  2. 2Remove any keywords that are already present in your title (exact words or phrases)
  3. 3Remove any duplicate keywords — keep each root word only once
  4. 4Re-arrange the remaining unique keywords to fill the 250-character limit efficiently
  5. 5Paste the cleaned list back into the Search Terms field and save

Prevention tips

  • Use a keyword deduplication tool or spreadsheet to check backend terms before uploading
  • Follow the rule: if the keyword is in your title, do not put it in backend keywords
  • Treat backend keywords as overflow for terms that are not already in your listing copy
Typical fix time: 30 minutes
