Amazon Restricted Products: What You Cannot List and Why

A guide to Amazon's restricted products policy — what is banned, what requires approval, and how to check before sourcing.

Amazon prohibits listing certain products outright and requires approval for others. Prohibited products include: weapons capable of killing or injuring (certain knives, tasers, ammunition in some cases), products that infringe on intellectual property, products making false claims, stolen goods, counterfeit products, and products that violate laws in the jurisdictions where Amazon operates. Products requiring approval include: alcohol (must be a licensed distributor), certain pesticides, prescription-only medical devices, products making drug claims without FDA approval, and products containing certain chemicals. To check if your product is restricted before sourcing, search for similar products on Amazon. If competitors are listing the product without issues, it is likely not prohibited. For borderline products, check Amazon's Restricted Products policy page in Seller Central Help and search for your specific product category.
